Embossing and Debossing

What is embossing?

Concave-convex embossing, also known as embossing printing, is one of the most common processes in the surface processing of printed matter.

In order to emphasize the local effect of the design, the engraved model is used to roll out the three-dimensional graphics on the printed local graphics, so that The design has a more three-dimensional effect, a richer sense of hierarchy, and adds artistry.

It uses a concave-convex mold to plastically deform the substrate of the printed matter under a certain pressure, thereby artistically processing the surface of the printed matter.

The embossed various convex graphics show different shades of patterns and have a clear sense of relief, which enhances the three-dimensional sense and artistic appeal of the printed matter.

Concave-convex process template classification:

The embossing production process does not use ink, and the effect is produced through pressure, which will not cause any pollution to the environment.

Printing plates can be made of different materials and here are three common templates for the embossing process.

1.Copper plate

It has the characteristics of high hardness, high durability, and clear lines. It is suitable for the production of fine graphics and lines, but the disadvantage is that its production cost is relatively high. Laser engraved technical paper plate.

2.Brass version

Good material for making concave-convex templates at present. The products made with it are of high quality and high price.

3.Zinc plate

The price of plate making is low, much cheaper than others, and the number of printings is small, so relief printing plates cannot be made.

What is the difference between embossing and debossing?

When pressure is applied from the back of the substrate to make its surface raised, it is called "concave", and when pressure is applied from the front of the substrate to make its surface concave, it is called "indentation".

Both printing effects are done with dies or metal plate stamping.

These processes are very suitable for highlighting logos, text, graphics, or creating shading for the surface of the paper, the purpose is to make the plain paper have a 3D feeling.

Embossing and debossing can be divided into colorless and colored, and different methods are used for different designs.

Colored embossing and debossing can be processed not only on printing colors but also on hot stamping.

Due to the cooperation of the two processes, the technical requirements for the printing master are higher, and greater losses will be generated during the printing process. Therefore, the more colors are embossed, the more difficult it is to register.

It is recommended to use thick paper for dents so that the processed effect will be more obvious. Especially for dents, there is no effect if there is no relative thickness.

Cardboard that is too thin is not suitable for embossing, because it will be more difficult to punch out graphics

Why use embossing on box packaging?

Embossing is mainly used for printing various high-end packaging boxes, trademark labels, invitations, greeting cards, book covers, certificates, character patterns, animal patterns, landscape patterns, etc.

The substrates of embossing are mainly paper and its products. Generally, the thickness of the paper that can withstand four-convex embossing is about 0.3~1mm.

Three advantages of using concave-convex technology on gift boxes:

①Make stereo modeling pattern text, add the artistic effect of the packaging box

②Improve the product grade and increase the added value of the product

③The advanced and fine concave-convex shape is difficult to imitate and has a considerable anti-counterfeiting effect.

Bottom Line:

Now, you may have understood what is embossing and debossing. Hope this article resolve your questions.
